Both Ways

After some very wordy posts, I’m going to keep this one brief. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what the phrase “having it both ways” could really mean, curious as it is. To that end, I offer you this image:

According to the Library of Congress site from which it came, it was published in Harper’s Weekly in 1895 and it is titled in the catalogue, “Near Haputale – ‘the two ways’ (rail and road).”
